This ‘Regional history’ written by Susan Marsden was part 1.2 of the report Heritage of the River Murray prepared by John Dallwitz and Susan Marsden (Heritage Investigations) assisted by Peter Donovan. The published report presents a summary of a survey of heritage items and areas along the River Murray in South Australia during 1983-4 and reflects the scholarship and information available in that period. The state’s regional and thematic survey program was conceived in Marsden’s State Historic Preservation Plan: Historical guidelines (1980). That report provided guidelines for the regional surveys by heritage consultants and Heritage Branch staff that covered all of the incorporated areas of South Australia between 1981 and 2000.
