‘Picturesque Scientific Gardening’: developing Adelaide Botanic Garden 1865-1891

 The original volume aimed to examine a variety of aspects of the life of the City of Adelaide during the years when William Shakespeare was an inspector on the staff of the City Corporation.

This essay was first published in Brian Dickey (ed), William Shakespeare’s Adelaide 1860-1930, Adelaide, Association of Professional Historians, 1992, pp.126-146, and is reprinted here with minor changes.

Pauline Payne is an Adelaide-based professional historian who is also Visiting Research Fellow in the School of History and Politics, University of Adelaide. Her most recent book, The Diplomatic Gardener. Richard Schomburgk: explorer and botanic garden director (2007) was based on her 1992 PhD thesis.
